SHOWDOWN IN SAMMAMISH: Community Rises as City Council Poised to Double What GMA Mandates
Sammamish, WA — July 14, 2025 — A pivotal moment is set to unfold in Sammamish as residents prepare to pack City Hall in opposition to a city council vote that could reshape the character and density of their community. The council is poised to vote on a controversial plan that would double what is mandated by the REQUIRED Growth Management Act (GMA), despite widespread public disapproval.
The grassroots coalition Save Our Sammamish is spearheading the resistance, armed with a JotForm survey revealing that 92% of a record breaking almost 800 respondents oppose the proposed increase. Community members are not only attending the city council meeting Tuesday en masse, but will also submit a rapidly growing petition that has already surpassed 2,000 signatures.
“We are at a critical crossroads,” says one SOS organizer Heather Murphy-Raines. “This proposal would drastically alter the landscape and livability of Sammamish without the consent of its citizens. The people have spoken, and the city council must listen. They must represent current constituents, not future ones.”
The meeting, expected to be contentious and heavily attended, is a reflection of Sammamish residents’ growing frustration with what many see as overdevelopment without adequate infrastructure, emergency evacuation ability, or environmental foresight.
This is not just a local land-use issue, but a dramatic civic uprising in one of the Pacific Northwest’s most rapidly changing suburbs. The stakes are high, and the outcome could reverberate throughout the region as other cities watch how citizen advocacy confronts accelerated development mandates.
Media are strongly encouraged to attend tomorrow’s council meeting to witness this grassroots movement in action. The story developing in Sammamish touches on key regional themes: suburban identity, growth pressures, civic engagement, and the balance between state mandates and local control.

What we have sent to our followers:
SOS!! The city received a record breaking almost 800 Jotforms surveys from us. We still need you!Despite those Jotforms being overwhelming 95% No Action, "stick with the plan," no to doubling to 4000 housing units and raising building heights? The city staff and city council statements on social media did not at all waiver in their recommendation of 4000 housing units, even while acknowledging they know we have an emergency evacuation problem, overcrowded LWSD high school, claim to be environmentalist, when really this turns into sprawl paid for by regressive taxes that push out our most vulnerable fixed-income seniors and low income renting families. They need to hear us. They need to realize their job as elected and hired public servants is to represent CURRENT SAMMAMISH CITIZENS, NOT FUTURE ONES. PLEASE COME TO THE MEETING Tuesday!! We need that room full to apply pressure as we did when they proposed 15 story buildings in April. Let's come together as a community and tell them NO to 4000 housing units. Tell them to choose No Action and Stick to the Plan of 2k housing in nits We care deeply as I am sure you do if you live in Sammamish, please show up to the Sammamish City Council Meeting, next Tuesday July 15th at 6:30PM. Wear green. Bring signs. Sign up at the beginning of the meeting to give public commentary. Let's fill that room and apply pressure as they decide OUR future. Even if you don't talk, bring a sign, or wear green, please come. Listen. Find out what this issue is all about. Bring your kids. We need you. Our forest and bears, bobcats, eagles, owls, bats, cougars, otters, and kokanee need you. Our fixed-income elderly and struggling low income renting families need you. Our thousands of school children on 228th need you. Your families that want you at home, and not in hours of traffic gridlock need you there. Thank you for saving Sammamish!!
